Mar 07, 2007 · I was able to use 1/4" thick hardibacker and I love it. I also picked up a scorer while I was there to aid me in the cutting of the hardi backer. Putting up cement board is just like putting up drywall. You cut it to fit, and then screw it to the studs. I left a 1/8" gap between panels.
It's also possible on newer showers that the pan is not properly adhered where the drain sandwiches the pan. If the shower walls are constructed out of Sheetrock or concrete backer board, and the floor is built with traditional wire lath and cement, a setup like this usually cannot handle the stress of movement.

While grout is hard and durable it is not very flexible and it can easily crack and break when flexed. Caulk should be used between the tile planes where there is flex and movement between the tile planes. Caulking is much more water tight and will not allow water to get between the tile planes and leak behind the shower.

Dec 21, 2012 · How should this joint detail come together? I was planning on pouring the pan first and then hanging the cement fiber board. I would be leaving a 1/4″ gap between the bottom of the fiberboard and the top of concrete. I would put a bead of caulk between the gap so that the Redgard would be able to make a solid transition from pan to wall.

All the videos I've watched and advice I've read show the 1/2" backer board stopping just above the top of the flange and then the tile hanging over the flange just leaving a 1/8" or so gap at the bottom for the silicon caulk.
